The deal is that it spread most rapidly amongst homosexual males at the outset of its outbreak because the sexual practices of that subgroup, at the time, involved unprotected sex with multiple partners. And because homosexual men were having sex with other homosexual men (and not women), it quickly spread within that segment of the population.
Once members of that population had heterosexual encounters, donated blood, and shared needles with other populations, it began to spread into other segments of society. Today AIDS is actually spreading faster in other populations than in the gay population, which was only a matter of time considering heterosexual encounters are more common than homosexual ones.
I highly recommend renting the HBO original movie "And the Band Played On." It is an excellent dramatic encapsulation of the origin, discovery, and spread of AIDS featuring a fantastic ensemble cast of well-known stars.

with heterosexual sex, there's a smaller chance of transmision because you're not going to have open tears in the skin through which the virus will pass. With anal intercourse, you'll have a lot more trauma and more bleeding since the anal canal is more sensitive and bleeds more easily. With this being said, "heterosexual" anal intercourse will care the same risk ans "homosexual" anal intercourse.

No one want to talk about homosexuality so no one points out that they need to use protection even if no ones gonna get pregnant. Plus. Not everyone feels comfortable 'going all the way' (anal sex, ect) so fooling around is popular or frequent and... well... oral sex too. Plus it's not like they can really have a future (damn homophobes) so some that I know don't really try to hold a relationship and end up sleeping with a lot of people.
Even out of hetero couples who use a condom, is it to prevent pregnancy or STD? Preg. usually. It's kind of sad.

The homosexuals have anal sex, that area is very vascular and bleeds easily, thus with semen the virus can be transmitted easier.
Heterosexuals do get it too, so do drug users and healthcaare workers...any contact with bodily fluid in an open cut etc puts a person at risk

In Africa...aids is primarily a heterosexual disease...when it first came to North America is entered through the homosexual community...but it is rapidly spreading to straights as well...that's where a lot of the real danger is now is that straight people think that it's a gay disease..when it's not.

Partly because it spread a bit faster at first within the homosexual communities. Why? When homosexuality was first coming out of the closet and becoming more mainstream, people had more sex partners as they were experimenting and enjoying their newfound "sexual freedom". Also biologically, the type of sex that homosexuals have is more prone to give small skin tears which promotoes exchange of fluids (blood/semen).
These days it's just misconceptions that lead people to think it's more of a "gay thing" when really it is not linked to them at all.

Biggots will make connections between what people can relate to as evil and what they believe to be evil.
AIDS and HIV are as much a heterosexual problem as it is a homosexual problem. People who hate homosexuals (conservatives and christians among others) will pray on peoples igmorance by blaming these diseases on homosexuals purely to villify them. Creedence is given to these claims when ignorant folk do not do the required research and blindly follow what they have been told by their government or church.
Thank you for asking this question... it proves there are still some people out there who use their heads.

When AIDS was first discovered it was most common in the homosexual community and it became associated with homosexuals. Now it's just as common in heterosexuals but the former associations still linger.

It is often associated with homosexuality by conservative Christian groups, who use AIDS as a political weapon in an attempt to destroy the rights of gay men and women.

Anal sex is more dangerous in part because there's a greater likelyhood of a blood-to-blood transfer through microscopic cuts in the penis and the rectum.
