Does the notion that left-handed people are artistic hold true?

No. You are thinking of right-brained. And a left-handed person is not "right-brained" in that sense. While the right side of the brain does control the left hand, the right side of the brain also controls the left eye and the left leg, etc.

It's a common misunderstanding.

I'm left handed and artistic I suppose. I do not need to buy for the left handed like scissors etc as can use my right for that. I can write with my right too.
Artistic people are left and right handed, usually there is an artistic/creative flare in the bloodline. My mother was exceedingly artistic yet my father didn't have any talents other than braun

Okay, so I'm right-handed, but here goes. There is SOME evidence to suggest that left-handed people could be more artistic. Quantitative? Conceptual? Logical? The same evidence would suggest not. The reasons for this, is that the left side of the body is responsive to the right side of the brain. The right side of the brain (as supported by the studies of Gozzaniga and Sperry of 1967 with split corpus callosum) is responsible for the "big picture," random thought, intuition and subjectives. Most of the sensory corteces and such are also on this hemisphere. The evidence of Gozzaniga 1967 further supports that spacial reasoning and some visual reasoning are located on the right side of the brain. It would follow that those who are left-handed would be better at the activities of the right-brain. The left-brain is, according to Gozzaniga 1967, responsible for logical reasoning, quantitatives, logic, rationalizing, analyzing and verbal/language acquisition and conception. So, if the lefties want to say that their left-handedness makes them more creative, us right-handers, by the same logic and evidence, are better at a lot of other stuff. Got to admit one way or the other. :)

Not always artistic, but usually creative. There is a great book about all the famous left handed folks, but I cannot remember what it was called. It was very funny, because it lists a lot of people who invented things as well as sport stars that were all left handed. We are the only ones in our right minds, you know.

I've been working with other artists since the 70's and I have not seen any difference in right-handed or left-handed artists. I think you start off with some natural ability and then like all other things in life you work, study and constantly evolve. Granted if you love what you do it isn't work in the traditional sense and that makes it much easier.

As a lefty and as an artist and musician, I'm goning to say yes. There is no sceintific proof, but the large list of lefties who are creative help support this theory. Some of them include: Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Julius Cesar, Albert Einstein, David Byrne, Leonard Da Vinci, Bob Dylan.

One out of every ten people walking down the street is left-handed. Everywhere they go, left-handed people come across tools that were designed for right handed persons.

From scissors to camcorders to screw drivers to hockey sticks to baseball gloves, lefties learn early on that they need to develop skills to live in a world designed for right handed people.

If you are a right-handed person, try this experiment sometime: Grab a scissors with your left hand and try cutting a piece of paper. Don't be surprised if the experience feels extremely awkward.

Thankfully, there are companies that make left-handed scissors, left handed camcorders, and other left-handed tools. But often times left-handed persons find themselves in a situation where they have no choice but to use something designed for right-handed persons.

In ages past, society was not sympathetic to left-handed persons. Young students who preferred using their left hand to write were punished for doing so. Some of these students eventually learned to write with their right hand, but only after enormous effort.

These days parents and teachers are far more accepting and understanding. In almost every school in the world, students who are left handed are allowed to continue using their left hand to write.

Medical researchers have searched long and hard for what causes people to be left handed or right handed. The researchers have concluded that left handed people are left handed for the same reason as brown eyed people have brown eyes. It's just one of those things that shows up in one out of every ten people.

A really interesting question is whether there is any connection between left handed people and creative genius. Some of history's most creative minds have been left-handed.

In the category of art, both Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo were left handed. In the category of music, Ludwig van Beethoven was left handed. In the field of science and invention, you find Benjamin Franklin, Isaac Newton, and Albert Einstein. In the field of motion pictures, Charlie Chaplin.

Bobby Fisher, the modern chess genius, is left handed. So too musical geniuses Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, and Wynton Marsalis.

Each of the these persons had a mind so exceptional as to be head and shoulders above anyone else in their field. So even though it may be more difficult for a left handed person to live in a right handed world, lefties can know that they are in good company. Beethoven and Einstein had it tough, too.
