It depends. If it means giving up your beliefs, it is wrong. Anything that forces you to compromise part of who you are is a "bad thing" as you so bluntly put it. Conversely, nothing gets done without some level of compromise and conformity. Like I said, it isn't just black and white.

Conformity is neither "good" nor "bad." Am curious why we are always asking these types of questions, anyway, but I digress. Conformity results from normal social circumstances and social pressures. If you want to read up on it, try studies by Solomon Asch conducted in the 1950's. Although societal experiences and such have changed since then, I suspect the outcomes of this research wouldn't be so different today.

Personally, I think it depends. "Conformity" can be anything from a group of people developing a common purpose and sharing goals, to a group of people incredibly afraid of being different.

I think it's all a matter of degree. A little conformity likely contributes to cohesion, but a lot can be harmful.

Here's something to think about:
Ever know someone who defines themselves as a "nonconformist" to an extreme degree, so that they are always trying to find a way to go against the trends?

Personally, I think such a person is just as much a slave to pop culture as the extreme conformist. If you're an extreme NON-conformist and something you like suddenly becomes "cool" then you're forced to abandon it. Thus, the dominant culture rules you... just in the reverse.

It is neither entirely good, nor entirely bad. There are behaviors to which people should conform, such as stopping at traffic lights. There are behaviors to which people should be non-conformist, such as not participating in a riot.

Generalizing, though, conformity is a huge obstacle in the path to individuation. Seldom are people truly aware of the subtle conformities in their lives nor of the more overt conformities.

sometimes good sometimes bad.
If everyone is brushing their teeth then you really don't know if it good or bad until you decide for yourself.

on the other end,if everyone is following orders to perform genocide then maybe its best that you are not a following sheep.
you know what iam saying? No one easy rule will help ya. got to be a good judge of character and make common sense decisions.
