Lucifer is name of the Roman god for the morning star. He was also known as "the light bringer." In Isaiah the Hebrew phrase for "light bringer" was translated in the Greek as "Lucifer" the Roman god who was the light bringer. This is anachronistic as Lucifer most likely wasn't around when Isaiah wrote his story. However, there are fools who simply read the English Bible with little or no intellect as to where these words and phrases came from. In fact you have a bunch of them attempting to answer your question with the word "Lucifer."

Satan or the devil did not exist in the Bible until after the Babylonian exile. Up until that time God or YHWH did evil and smite the world. The first use of the word Satan comes in Chronicles written circa 323 BCE. Here Satan commands David to perform a census. In the Samuel/Kings version it was God which had David perform this same census.

The Hebrew religion evolved to where God could not do evil. So evil had to be explained. They adopted the Babylonian god "Satan" to be the evil counterpart or their Dr. Evil if you will.

References to Satan are clearly mythological. Names for the "devil" have been taken from gods from various cultures.

he has multiples, as pointed out. But if we're talking about his *name* like the name of god which man cannot speak, then you're not likely to find it. Names mean power, and knowing the true name of god or the devil would give you power over them - according to ancient beliefs in god/s. Why would the devil even have a real name, philosophically? or god? it's not necessary for them, I imagine people/angels/whatever recognize them by 'sight'.

'course, according to rocco's modern life, he's named peaches.

I always liked the name lucifer though.

Lucifer. It means "light bearer." Satan was an angel until he rebelled against God.

Isaiah 14:12 says, "How are thou fallen O Lucifer, son of the morning. how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations."

Ezekiel 28:15 says, "Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee."
