Keep in mind that if you have to recharge it, it could be leaking out somewhere.
Also, I would check first that the cooling fins are all thoroughly cleaned (as they will ice up otherwise), and that it is sitting level in the window?

Yes, home air conditioners can be recharged but if your unit isn't cooling properly then chances are it has a leak which will also need to be fixed. Newer, less dangerous cooling agents are on the market now but someone with the proper equipment would need to do your repairs.
The same equipment can be used to fix car air conditioners, home units and also refrigerators.
Luckily I have a husband that can do this for us because the coolant alone is very expensive. Good luck and keep cool.

Yes it is. It is done thousands of times each day by qualified technicians.
Are you asking if you can? I supose you could if you had the tools and refrigerant. the EPA has rules reguarding this (web search on section 608 of the clean ir act).
You are most likely taking about a window unit. these can be recharged but the leak should be fixed first or it will leak back out. Recharging isn't like a battery. It is physically putting a chemical into a sealed system. If it stays sealed, you never have to charge it again.
If you don't have knowledge of A/c systems (or tools or know someone who can do this for you for free) and it is a window unit, I would go buy a new one.
email me if you have any other questions.

Yes, my parents had it done to their air conditioner a number of times. For some air conditioners it may be cost prohibitive due to the fact that the motor and bearings wear out. It just depends on what overall condition your air conditioner is in.

Yes it is, however for what it would cost to recharge it, let alone what it would cost to plug up the hole that the freon is leaking from, you very well could spend less money on a brand new unit.

yes it is possible - best way is to have it leak checked, evacuated and then recharged. eliminates the possibility of losing your fresh charge and removes any air pockets that might be in there.
