They don't get paid, so what's the point? Are they doing it to help other people or is it just for purely selfish reasons, ie. show their knowledege?

Every person editing Wikipedia probably has their own motivations for doing so. For many, the big-picture goal of the project -- to provide a free encyclopedia to every person on the planet in their own language -- is a large factor. Other motivations include the value of seeing your writing so widely used, and being part of an interesting community.

Why do people volunteer? To help everyone else out. Usually people don't check who edited an article in wikipedia so it can't be that they want credit for it. It's just something people like to do, especially if they are bored!

you are very cynical, but you could say the same about yahoo answers...why be helpful if you are not going to be paid for it?

Well, I want to help if I can and I suspect many people involved in Wikipedia feel the same.

Of course showing off what you know is always nice, but showing off how stoopid you are is sometimes the end result...
