In some cases its brainwashing, in other cases its forced coersion. I have heard stories of family members threatened to be slaughtered if a person refused. I don't think all of these people are such willing volunteers, although some are.
But to the ones that are, this only goes to show the extremism of Islam. It shows the ugliness, and cruelness of the muslim faith. I dont so much blame the commoner as I do the religion and the leaders of that religion. The individual bomber is a mere pawn, and the action has no strategic purpose. Its just an annoyance, an irritant. Terrorism does not win wars.

Another day another dollar....
Actually for some of these people it is a ticket to riches for their family or being held in esteem in a culture that has neither riches or esteem for the regular Joe.
Posters are hung and accolades are handed out to their families.
And about the virgin thing.... Some wag said: why would you want 72 virgins... a mere handful of experienced partners may be more fun... Or how about the ladies - do they get 72 virgins too? Seems to be a real double standard presuming that both sexes would find that same lofty gift so desirable - simple minds simple pleasures...
I sometimes wish they'd grow up and get a clue before buying into that jihad thing they got going on over there... by murdering others they reach salvation. Yup, that is a great foundation for a peaceful set of beliefs...

Yes, they are brainwashed. One of the great things about America is the education. We are taught about other countries, whereas most other countries only learn about themselves. It's important to know your home and your neighbors as well. That's what puts one above the rest: knowledge.
Although, on television sometimes it shows some people use their knowledge as a bad thing. They show that it gets to their head.. But usually that deals with fame or ignorance. If you know enough, you know those things aren't important and that no one is better than anyone. Knowledge just puts you in a place that keeps you safe. You KNOW enough about right and wrong that you can make your own decisions.
Point being, instead of hating these people strapping bombs to themselves, they should be taught better. ESPECIALLY if they are young. There is still time.

Who are you talking about? Do you personally know someone that has been strapping bombs to their bodies? Or is it about what you "hear". The image of suicide bombers that mainstream media portray are that of very young, gullible, hoping for virgins in heaven, extremely religious, etc. well that is just propaganda and misinformation. Look at the 911 attacker: Most were in their late 20's and early 30's. Many were not extremely religious, they were not considered gullible.
It is obvious that you are not very well informed about this subject. I suggest that you read The Guardian newspaper, in the past it has featured some interesting articles and insights into the lives of suicide bombers. You would be surprised to know what their motives really are.

Belief is a very, very powerful force for all of us. "Buy this and you'll be more beautiful/handsome/live better/have a better life/be cooler/be unique/be more intelligent, etc. etc. ect. Those are the very same beliefs that drive us to buy things we really don't need, or to behave in ways that we ourselves are not truly aware of.
I'm not sure it has anything to do with being gullible, but more to do with following our unconscious beliefs. You want independent thought? You want consciousness? Then practice compassion. Understand that the very same compelling force that drives you to do something or behave in a certain way, is the same force that drives them to do what they do.
Whether we consider what others do "wrong or right" is not really the point. Perhaps if we all practiced awareness and compassion, we would all be free of this illusion of "differences" that separates us & causes these very issues in the first place.
Food for thought?

no independent thought, no perceived hope of a future and the notion that once deceased martyrdom is acheived with leads to virgins waiting for you on the other side. just a little bit of what's been talked about.
i doubt anyone has ever proven the waiting virgins promise.

Gullibility is not the same as BRAINWASH.
These poor slobs believe their BOOK and strap a Shaheed Belt on simply to get to HOOKER HEAVEN. IN that faith it's about the only way, they area told , to be sure of getting there.
