Added: I know how to use the console, there seems to be no command such as "hide_chat_panel". Any ideas?

Fast and ignorant way: Tape a piece of thick cardboard on the screen - remember during the game to avoid corners where enemies can get you from the left side.
Slow and Smart way: go in OPTIONS, click KEYBOARD then ADVANCED, Check the CONSOLE flag and then look for the proper command (should be autocompleting) to switch On or Off.
Play safe and all screen wide ;)
