I have been taking Depo for 15 years now. It was prescribed to prevent periods, since I have endometriosis. Due to other reasons, I have now stopped taking this medication. Does anyone know whether my body will adjust. I am experiencing pain in my abdomen and breasts.

The book Contraceptive Technology says: "It is not possible to discontinue Depo Provera immediately. Weight gain, depression, breast tenderness, allergic reactions, and menstrual irregularities may continue until Depo Provera is cleared from a woman's body, about 6 to 8 months after her last injection. After discontinuing Depo Provera, women may also have a 6 to 12 month delay in return of fertility."

You might try cleansing techniques to detox or eliminate the synthetic hormone from where it is stored in your body's tissues: drink lots of water every day, eat lots of fresh raw organic vegetables, drink raw vegetable juice, sweat in a steam room or sauna, get lots of exercise and fresh air. You can also ask at a health food store about herbal formulas or teas that help detoxify your body or that balance female hormones, or talk with a naturopathic physician or herbalist.

I took Depro Provera for about a year. To be totally honest with you.. I took it to prevent getting pregneant and it made me depressed/ very emotional. Never got pain in my abdomen/ breasts, though. You might want to see a doctor, if the pain is bothersome.
I remember that I did not have a regular period for quite some time, and I had a lot of spotting. However, I did not take depro for as long as you did.. I only took it for maybe a year. I don't know why you are in pain.. maybe it's one of the side effects? or, maybe because you were on it for so long? your body will adjust..
oh, I remember they told me that I could take some birth control pills for a little bit, to make my period more regular. Hope this helps.

The only things I have ever heard with regard to ending Depo after long-term use is that patients are likely to experience menstrual irregularities... ranging from no periods for a year or two to very irregular periods. As with any hormone, though, I would say it is likely your breasts will be tender with the reintroduction of your body's own hormones. As for abdominal pain... it depends. Is this lower abdomen? It could be you are feeling your endometriosis or ovulation.

Either way, you should discuss it with your doctor.

I have a friend who was on it for 5 years and stopped taking it about a year ago. She is trying to get pregnant, but has only had 1 period in the last year. She was told by her doctor that it takes a while for it to get out of your system. She has not had any pain though. Hope that helps a little.

I don't really know, I was on it for 5 years and in that time I got pregnant twice!!! Go figure, right! Anyway I think it all depends on your body, I would ask a doctor if that's normal

I took it for 4yrs. It took about 1yr. for my periods to return. I took it for endometriosis. It was awhile for me to get back to normal.
You might want to let your doctor know about your pain. There is meds. that will help you with that.
