I visited in 1995. If you are female, I strongly advise that you travel with a male companion, as western women, by themselves, tend to become targets of leering and some abuse..
My trip involved staying in Cairo (18th floor of the Marriot Hotel during an earthquake), touring the city, The citidel and the main souk, the Cairo Museum as well as Giza for a trip into the Mid pyramid. I also arranged a Nile Cruise aboard the cruise ship Chapollion. It began in Luxor, with stops all the way upriver to Aswan. Included in the tour was Karnak, the valley of the kings (you can go into Tut's tomb), the mortuary temple, Elephantine Island, Esa, Edfu, The Aga Khan's mausoleum, Philae and the Aswan Dam itself.
Later, back in Cairo, I took a side trip to Port Said, and then out into the Sinai desert. It was really impressive. Contrary to what someone else posted here, I had no problems with beggars ( I had a terrible time with them in India), but everyone wants to help you with things, and they expect "bakeesh", to be tipped, for even lifting a bag. I found the people to be very friendly ( I'm Canadian and always wore some sort of maple leaf) and as a male, I was easily able to walk the streets late at night with no issues. If you enjoy history, there aren't many other countries on the planet, that can offer so much. Respect their local customs and you will have a great time.Try to learn some basic Arabic, before going (thank you, please, your welcome, hello, etc) and it will go a long way. Many Egyptians speak English (it is mandatory in their schools) and don't be surprised if school childeren come up to you and ask questions or show off their English skills! Egypt is one of the most progressive and modern of the Arabic countries, they even brew their own beer, called Stella and if you are of age, you can enjoy that as well as Casinos in the hotels. This is unheard of in many other Arabic countries and goes a long way to show that Egyptians are willing to encourage tourism and even some western ways.
I have travelled all the way around the world and Egypt is one of four countries I would spend more money and time, to visit again. The others being England,China and Singapore.
If you can afford it, go. You won't be disapointed.

Have been to Egypt several times (last time six month ago) and I do not recommend it and specially not the tourist traps like Al Gurhada/Hurghada and other similar places. There are a lot of interesting pre Arabic places to see and Cairo is worth a mass as well as Alexandria. At countryside Egypt is still a quite undeveloped country with very low prices if they do not recognize you as a tourist. Egypt is still also a little bit unsecured place to visit. Tunisia is much safer and I like Tunisia much better. All depends what you intend to do.

I've been there 2 years ago..haven't seen the pyramids unfortunately and mostly stayed in the hotel area....one of those all inclusive where you have all the facilities right there (beach, swimming pool, water activities, and stuff). It was really hot, but the sea and underwater workd was beautiful...you can do some diving there if you're interested...I'd definitely go there again and do more sightseeing.

its very interesting for tourists.. and i disagree with one of ur answerers who mentioned that it would be unsafe coz its totally safe.. my foreign fiends visit me all the time and stay with me and they've never complained abt safety..
as for the weather, yes, it tends to get really hot here.. today its was 37 C (approx. 98.6 F) so u gotta be prepared..

I was there about 10 years ago. Worth the trip. The constant begging gets annoying though.
