I'm going on a vacation w/ my parents and we're going to Va and NC -- just wanting to know if anyone can share w/ me any nice scenic rides that go thru the farm country/mountains as well as if there are any nice places to visit/parks or anything that would be good to go to in both of those states and do for about a week???

The Blue Ridge Parkway is as scenic as it gets for that area. It's been called "America’s most scenic drive" and it's gorgeous. It ranges almost 500 miles from the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the Great Smoky Mountain Park in North Carolina and Tennessee and averages 3000 feet of elevation. I grew up close to it (Lynchburg, VA) and can attest to its beauty.

You asked a good question at a good time though, because I just took my wife to central Virginia for the weekend a couple of weeks ago (anniversary trip - we got married down there) and we had a great time. You want to see beautiful farm country? One of the things we did was check out a Blue Ridge Mountain vineyard:

Mountain Cove Vineyards
Al Weed, Winegrower
1362 Fortunes Cove Lane
Lovingston, Virginia 22949

It's a tiny little place but beautiful. The lady there who served us the wine also gave us a map of other local vineyards and we spent the afternoon driving around back country roads tasting wine at various vineyards, slowly working our way north as we headed home to DC. We had a great time and came back with a half-dozen bottles of good wine. Take your time so you're not driving buzzed of course. :-)

Hope you have a great time whatever you do!

I just moved to NC from VA, and I've lived in Richmond, which isn't country, but a very awesome place with tons to do. In Roanoke Rapids, NC which is at the very top of NC, there's a lot of country roads, and right by a place called Historic Halifax, which a great place to visit and tour. There is also something called the "Canal Trail" which is walking or biking trail, but still very beautiful.

Maymont park in Richmond is amazing, as well. And Belle Isle and Browns Island in the downtown part of Richmond, VA.

Hope this helps! :)

Well, I would suggest US 74. Starting in Asheville, NC to Chimney Rock/Lake Lure area. It's a mountainous road for the most part, but it has great views and Chmney Rock/Lake Lure is a popular tourist attraction. Also, if you turn on US 64, you will go to Hendersonville, another small town with lots of tourism in the summer and fall especially.

I think that the scenery down highway 64 is awesome. It goes from the NC coast to the mountains. You do have to go through Raleigh though, but the rest of the way is worth it.

There is also alot of small country towns along the route plus good shopping spots.

Shenandoah Valley for sure. Try out Williamsburg. Water Country USA and Busch Gardens is there. Also the Historic Triangle: Jamestown-Yorktown-Williamsburg with lots of museums and history.
