How do we learn to accept each other's differences, and get past racism, and hate once and for all?

The first nine answers are all indicative, in one way or another (and in one extreme or another) of the problem. Thanks all of you, but in each response there is a bit of the thinking that causes the problem (some more than others).
Jesus did point the way, but then so did Buddha and Mohammed, so saying that we should follow the ways of Jesus may be correct, but it immediately creates a "division".
Even the person that spoke of Germany and the prejudice there... I know it was just an example, but I lived in Germany for a couple years as a child, and I too heard the story of the "black man", but the way I learned it it didn't have anything to do with race... The Black Man was an evil man covered in coal dust because he lived in the coal bin... I know you intended no disrespect, and indeed there is racism in Germany as there is in any country, but again... we are trained to think in an "us vs. them" kind of way.
Every response had an element of that in it. that is the key!

I do wonder about that, too. In my opinion, depending on where you live, the idea seems utopia. Where I live now...it's "somewhat" imaginable (Hawaii), but worldwide? In Germany for example a lot of people are very prejudiced and are racists. Spend one day there as a foreigner with dark skin and English speaking only, and you will know what I'm talking about. It seems that human beings have an inborn aversion towards everything that's different and threatening...or at least it seems genetic to teach the young ones to develop such an aversion. It is so important to raise our kids by instilling tolerance and love for all from when they are babies. The use of skin color to scare kids, so they behave (for example) should be avoided...which is common in Germany. You will hear parents say: "Behave or the black man will come an get you ( der schwarze Mann)."
In fact, you know...sometimes I wonder, if a global urge for these things that you mention to happen, will only become reality when we are threatened by the presence of aliens in a different planet (somewhere out there?)....then that hate might be directed towards that new unknown and therefore threatening phenomenon. Do you ever realize that when you try to be part of a group, you become more one of them when somebody new arrives? Something like that...
