It could be real and just an undiscovered species. There are stories of similar creatures throughout the world (Jersey Devil, "Mothmen" and Popa Bawa) but unless someone brings in a live one or a dead carcass, it is considered a myth and a mystery.

One thing to keep in mind is that is was thought that the coelecanth was extinct for millions of years, up until the caught one off the coast of Africa, began search and found many more.

It's an animal vampire fairy tale. The stories of the chupacabra are well spreed around Puerto Rico. One theory is that some wild monkeys attack goats, chickens and others farm animals at night I really think that this is only a "cuento de camino"(road story) created to gain popularity.

fake, i heard about a guy who got a cow that died from natural causes then he let it lay out for a long time.
he sat there and watched to make sure no chupacabra came but then the cow ended up getting the same wounds and stuff found on "chupacabra victims" but they got there because of maggots and other natural causes

It's a local myth.

Like most stories of the same nature (Big Foot, the Yeti, Zombies, Dragons, Loch Ness Monster, etc, etc...) they are not real.
