Artists and creative minds are tortured souls.
Look at Van Gogh, Jackson Pollock, Howard Hughes, etc.
(I've heard) being famous or successful can be lonely. Illicit drugs or alcohol usually play a part too.

I believe that artists are tortured but if you look at old singer/songwriters like Carly Simon, Carole King, John Lennon, Paul Mcartney, I don't know that I'd say they were suicidal.. I think that society has changed SO much that there is a larger gap between what's cool and what's not ... so, the not-so-cool kids are treated more unkindly then what they were back in the day ... it's all society ...

I just guess here..but I think it is because they have an artistic route which makes them a bit melancholic, and then after they become so popular they feel so much pressure from the media and fans. Also, the record company pushes them a lot - to make more music, and it is under heavy pressure...some people cant take it...I know I wouldnt...I wouldnt manage to cope with it if I was famous and people talked to me and stared at me all the time...Kurt Cobain is an example...he couldnt take it. Also, they are more likely to do drugs, and it brings their life upside down, sudden big changes. So this is what I believe, but maybe I am wrong.

I asked this of a college psychology professor at one time, the answer was something like a person who is a good writter seems to have a inner understanding of the human condition, sorta like the ability to see humanity for what is really is. They are also very emotional and tend to lose themselves in the emotions and not be able to properly cope.
It's not only songwritters, think Hemmingway.

Its because the profession starts off as something that they enjoy writing, and then slowly it turns into a very high pressure working enviornment where they are constantly under the watch of the general public, which can be taxing in and of itself. And then, they are also exposed to the darker side of what money and fame can buy, the drugs, the alcohol, and the less than moral situations.

lol, I like that explanation offered by family guy. That last episode of Stewie B. Goode when Brian is sitting on a bench with Van Gogh, Hemmingway, and Cobain. They just killed themselves because they had different views of society. Of course their expression of the situation was different, but it all stemmed from the same thing.

I wouldn't say most but alot of the good ones died to that fate. I think drugs is more of the culprate. (like jimi hendrix and kurt cobain)
Its the fame and the pressure of being famous and you can access drugs up there, you have the money for it. Sometimes they think thats how you get rid of the stress(drinking may come into play too) It's sad, we lose so many greats to stupid things.

I wouldn't say that they're suicidal, maybe more emotional. being a singer/songwriter myself, I think being more emotional helps me write because I can put my emotions on paper and say them in a disguised way.
