I am an experienced web developer looking for some freelance work to do in my spare time. Do you need some work done on your website or a new website set up? Or do you know how I could get some extra work?

I would recommend contacting local web development firms and asking them if they have any extra work or if they will keep you in mind. Make sure to let them know your hourly rate and have a portfolio and resume handy.

One aspect of my company is web design and we work with freelance designers all the time. We try to price things out on a project basis but hourly is sometimes used.

Feel free to send your hourly rate, portfolio and resume to me and I'll keep you in mind. I have to say though that we have connections with some pretty talented guys with very competitive rates so I doubt if we will have much.

I would also recommend trying to go to www.eLance.com or www.RentACoder.com. You should be able to find some work their. The main issue with those sites is that you will be competing against the global market meaning you won't get anything over like $8/hr. (Likely too low).

Good luck!

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* How to Start a Home-Based Web Design Business, 2nd by Jim Smith
* The Real Business of Web Design Paperback by John Waters
* Professional Web Design: Techniques and Templates by Clint Eccher, Eric Hunley, Erik Simmons

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

I am a web developer myself and I have been getting freelance jobs on the side on www.guru.com. The format is, the employers would post different projects up; you and many other web developers would bid for the projects. If the employer chooses you to do the project, you get paid. As long as you don't compete with me for the projects, I am alright with you joining :)
