Cingular. Most corporations use it. I have a Blackberry that allows me to travel overseas. You need to get a special plan though. The cool part is even if you have a contract that doesn't include overseas international calling, you can temporarily add it by getting extra minutes like you would if you had a prepaid phone. And its a good deal...

The downfall? Cingular and AT@T merged, but it wasnt organized very well. So if you call for answers, youll never get a consistent answer.

You'd think for millions and millions of dollars worth of merging they could update their systems a little...but thats another story. :)

I would call the local cell phone providers and check out there free incoming plans. I pay 5 extra per month on my bill to rec free incoming calls from anywhere in the world. As for you calling him, I would find out about their international long distance plans.
You may be able to get a plan offering unlimitted international calling for a flat mothly rate.

I'm in Germany, and we have a number like the 10-10-220... and it's only about 5.5 cents a minute for us to call the states. From Germany I dial 01-051-001(area code) phone number I'm sure there is something like this for the UK as well!!

try skype, first download the software, as well as your friend, it is free don't worry. the calls are free between computers, now if you need to call a real phone , you can still do it , but need to buy $10.00 US. credit to place the call , and still the rates are very low. (skype.com)
