36 plays were included in the First Folio, which was published by some of Shakespeare's friends seven years after his death. Two additional plays have been generally accepted to have been written by Shakespeare.

We only know of the plays that survived, although Shakespeare authorship of some plays is disputed (or he may have been a collaborator). There are also a few plays that are referenced in documents that survived from the Renaissance although the plays themselves did not.
