It's symbolic of the duality of our physical dimension.
We live in a world of relativity, with few absolutes.
Hot and cold, high and low, tall and short, here and there, love and hate, good and bad, me and you, he and she.
You can't know what one is if you don't know of the other.
If you never felt warmth, you would never know what cold is because you would never experience anything but cold.
That's my theory.

When organisms reproduce assexually, the offspring are generally identical to the parent (since DNA replication is error-prone, they will certainly differ somewhat, but the chance that changing a single nucleotide in an entire genome will actually translate to a meaningful difference is slim). This means that if the parent has some trait that makes it unfit in its present environment, its offspring will probably be equally unfit. Sexual reproduction, on the other hand, is much less efficient, since it requires two organisms to produce a single new one and often involves elaborate courtship rituals (such as dinner and a movie). However, with sexual reproduction, the offspring inherit 1/2 their genes from each parent, so they will certainly be different from the parents. This allows for much more variation in a population, which increases the chances that some of the organisms will gain a trait which is beneficial. In sum, sexual reproduction lets organisms adapt and evolve faster since each generation should differ significantly from its parents.

When two different sexes produce offspring, the "dominant" genes are chosen out of the two different genotypes. The advantage is that the "lesser" traits are weeded out in favor of the dominant traits. Therefore, humans can be specialized to fit within the region they live. It also makes it less likely for viruses and genetic diseases to propagate far. If there was only one gender that reproduced (asexually), then there is a 100% chance that diseases would propagate.
As to why the different genders have different characteristics, the physical characteristics are all linked to their sex and geared towards reproducing. I don't think there are any other significant differences.
Note that all human fetuses start out as "female." We are all basically the same.

The main reason from a biological point of view is the exchange of DNA materials between two individuals, this allows a mechanism for evolution and diversity. It would not be possible to accomplish just by cell division. We need this because we are very complex organisms.
Luckily besides all that having two genres coexisitng is a lot of fun.

Sexual reproduction, (as opposed to asexual reproduction) allows for greater variety in the resulting offspring. The variation in the genetic structure may give the offspring the advantage of being more resistant to certaing diseases.
With asexual reproduction the exact genetic structure is passed to the offspring. Whatever can make the parent sick will also cause harm to the next generation.

that's how nature has been most of the time. life requires a male and female counterpart in order to reproduce. and also when you combine genes you usually produce better offspring. you seem to be trying to say that there is a higher purpose to humans being separated into sexes.

More mixing of different genes, faster mutation rate. Supposedly faster evolutionary advancement, if you believe in that sort of thing. The way some people revert to solitary sex and internet satisfaction, it makes me wonder if they will start budding offspring next.

Sexual selection and natural selection are the primary drivers of evolution. That's why most species in the world have males and females.
