They are an incomplete team in a tough division. They have some good players, but even Jay Bay needs protection in the lineup and baserunners to make an impact. Also, their pitching hasn't been as good as it was supposed to be.
It's a shame. I don't know anyone that doesn't want to see the Pirates do well again...Too bad their front office doesn't feel the same way.

Because of Jim Tracy. I'm a Pirates season-ticket holder. I go to a lot of Pirates games. I've seen Tracy try to change Chris Duffy so much that he quit baseball for a while. He tried to change Zach Duke.
I'll admit that after 13 straight losing seasons things did need a bit of changing. However, he took things that were working well and tried to fix those.
He also said that Joe Randa would be the starting third sacker when he came back from injury. Fortunately he noticed that Freddy Sanchez was leading the league in hitting and kept him playing.
Ronny Paulino has been a pleasant surprise. We could use more power from Sean Casey, but I don't think he'll be here too much longer anyway.

i agree with some of these answers...yes their pitching has been very rocky this year....yes they are a small market ball club w/ low payroll....paying for jeromy burnitz was a huge mistake in my book, they do this every year, but a couple old guys just to use them as trade bait and try to get a couple prospects near the trade deadline. however, burnitz is a washed-up hack who won't be worth anything
and how can you say bay is the only hitter? sanchez is fighting w/ garciaparra for the league lead in hitting. not bad for a guy who wasnt even a starter at the beginning of the season and had to be written into the all-star game.
tracy makes some poor moves some of the time with pitching. we are scoring runs!!! most of the games ive watched on fsn recently we've scored 5, 6, 7 runs and dont come away with a W!!! also tracy and the rest of the coaching staff trying to mold the players into what they want isnt helping either. leave zach dukes mechanics alone, same with duffy and paulino!!! please please please, do not touch freddy sanchez!!! i beg you!!

We will..... suck this season. Anyway I live in Pittsburgh (anybody feel sorry for me). Anyway our team is basically made up of young talent that everyone figures will blossom in a few years. Still 2 people from our team (Bay and Sanchez) made the all star game. They never will win a world series again but even finidhing over .500 is like winning a world series. I already am waiting for football and the Steelers.

They have a really small payroll and only Jason Bay is worth anything on that team.
