See the 2nd to last paragraph on the first page. It states the ref reviewed the video footage to red card Zidane!!

I know it was wrong, but that is not proper procedure for the refs-- there is no instant replay in World Cup Soccer. If they didnt see it on the field, they CANNOT review it on the screen to make a decision.

If they want to do that they need to make instant replay a policy of world cup soccer, which is it not a policy now.

Get over it. The action was blatant and in full view of the whole stadium. Add it to the stomping in 98 and the champions league headbutt and you start to think the guy might have some anger issues.

The ref didn't formally review the video footage, but there is speculation that he may have seen the replay on the stadium's big-screen. There is no way to know for sure.

The thing is that the ref was watching the ball, not some over-rated footballers that can't deal with pressure,...It's not the first time Zidane did this and it wasn't fair-play!
I don't know what Materazzi said to him but if he caused the incident with an racist comment,I think he should get punished too...

The Washington Post is a great newspaper, but I'm afraid the journalist who wrote that article doesn't know much about soccer... Since any other sport in America has video replay, she must have gotten confused.

wrong!!!!!!! that's why there is the fourth official he looks at the video and tells the refs exactly what happened. That article in the post is partly incorrect because if you were watching you would see that the lines man was perfectly postitioned to see the butt what probably happened was that he saw it and alerted the referee who made sure it was correct with the fourth official via their microphones that's the purpose of the fourth official

Yeah that's what they were saying, that the refs didn't see it but that they probably saw the replay on the big screen. Whether they saw it first hand or not it still happened.

y should someone with that behavior stay in the game ? but it wasnt the refs fault it was the the people who were in charge of the screen and plus in the policy of the world cup it never saids anything on that so it was fair.

I totally agree with you.
Having said that we all are against what Zizo did.
If it was a nother player, no one would make such a big deal of it.

So I say, give him a break, its already hard what he went through.

Zidane deserved the red card, so stop making excuses for him.
