There are several factors that could go wrong in surveys

1. Incorrect replies/Judgement of appropriate answer
2. Questionnaire is too long resulting in responses esp. toward the end to be of lower quality
3. Survey design is wrong
4. Lack of probing in questions
5. Questions too vague/confusing
6. Sampling protocol not followed
7. Wrong sample audience - true esp. in focus group situations where the focus group participants are not the correct respondents
8. Wrong market research tool
9. Missing data - either the interviewer conducting the survey failed to ask the question or the respondent skipped the question
10. In product tests, instructions or demonstrations of how to use the product not properly conveyed resulting in the respondent misusing the product
11. Poorly trained interviewer
12. Respondent's poor comprehension -- did not understand the question correctly
13. Encoding errors
14. Tabulation errors

There anre many things that can go wrong when conducting surveys. Almost too many to list. Try tobe a lttile more spcific if you can

Some problems include:

Baised questions(leading questions): These questions will ilicit specific responses instead of natural responses.

Biased respondents: When the respondent tries to influence the results for a spicific reason

Asking the wrong question: When the survey is just plain designed badly.

Wrong respondents: When you ercruit the wrong people to answer the survey.

Deciet: when people who are not qualified to answer a survey anyway so that they can get the reward.

Selecting a non-random random sample: Known as sampling error.

Incomlete answer sets: leads to respondents selecting answers they really dont want.

These are just some of the problems.

This is an expert from the article "Focus on Customer Satisfaction" available at http://www.infosurv.com/articles.htm

"There are numerous common pitfalls faced by companies when designing a survey: leading questions, biased questions, ambiguous questions, complex questions, 'pet' questions, incorrect survey length, incorrect survey sequence, improper survey scales, and improper response choice options to name a few."

I hope that this helps!

I think that its important not to raise the expectations of those you survey. For example you might want to find out what people in the office think about the catering, but if there is no budget or commitment to do anything about it it might just thow up lots of resentment that things are bad and not being addressed

Well, I did a survey once and I got down on my knees to pull out a steak and there was an earthquake. My tripod fell over and my sextant hit me in the head. So I fired them both and cooked my steak!

It depends on what type of survey it is. Is it a phone survey, mail, group, or what? The biggest thing is not getting honest answers.

People can lie or not read the questions. You could end up with a skewed demographic (all young people, all women, whatever).
