I am going to college next year, but I don't know what I want to do. My one dream is to open and run a gym (with the help of at least one other person,) but it would be difficult and possibly impractical for me to attempt it. I'm not interested in being a personal trainer, but I do like working out. I like the business end of running a gym. But, if I get into general business, I might have to work in a cubicle, which is the last thing I want to do. I want to be independent enough to make powerful decisions, yet I want to have the ability to dicuss matters with coworkers on a frequent basis (discussion groups or meetings, perhaps.) Also, I want to be able to see immediate results in whatever it is I'm doing.

What about physical therapy? You can teach people how to make themselves feel better and you will learn about the body. (It pays pretty well, too)

I would suggest you get the book "Do What You Are" by Paul and Barbara Tieger. The premise of the book is kind of like the test you take in High School that tells you what you should be. The problem with that test is that it basis your future occupation of your current values, goals and interests - and those things will change over time. Think about those three areas of your life right now and what they were 10 years ago - they've probably changed quite a bit. The book by the Tieger's suggests you choose a career based on your personality type. They have a short quiz in there to help you define your personality type. Then the book goes into explaining each personality type and then makes suggestions as to what fields my be suit your personality. They make it a point that their lists are by no means exhaustive and that any personality type can be happy in any field - they just have to find the right niche in that field. I'm an ESTP, an inherent risk taker, so I trade the derivatives and forex markets and I love it.

The book shouldn't be read as a be-all, end-all, but use it as a guide in discovering what career field will make you happy. You can get the book on Amazon.com and it's not very expensive (less than $30 if I remember correctly).

Best wish!!!

Having a scientific mind AND the ability to communicate creatively and effectively is a strong combination of gifts. Have you considered becoming a science writer/nature writer? You could look for a college that would allow you to major in an environmental science program while minoring in journalism (or at least taking some side courses). You would most likely need to get a start as a science reporter, but you could aim to eventually write your own books, especially ones that would help create the changes you'd like to see in the world. Many writers with a deep understanding of science (or history or whatever they specialize in) have succeeded in creating a wonderful life for themselves by following their passions from project to project, crafting compelling narratives of their research and adventures. You could write about the plants in your back garden or a wildlife preserve halfway around the world! If you haven't already, I'd suggest reading some books by E.O. Wilson and David Suzuki to see if what they do seems like something you would like to try. They - and others like them - have certainly been major influencers in the sorts of areas you feel strongly about. Best of luck with whatever you do decide! It sounds like you'd be great at any number of careers. :)

Don't do anything tech related. It is all being outsourced to India!

If you want to own a gym you are better off working in one for a few years and getting paid experiance rather then waste you parent's money on an education you won't need.
