Could it be a scam if you are asked to give $100.00 cash or money-order for a backround check? You will find out the same day of the interview if you are hired and the money will be refunded AFTER the training period. The interviews are closing the same day you respond to the newpaper ad, adding urgency to your decision. It feels like a scam. Is it common practice for employers to ask for employees to pre-pay for their own backround checks?

NO, AND MY EXPERIENCE WITH BACKGROUND CHECKS IS THAT THEY'RE NEVER DONE IN A DAY. YOU'RE BEING SCAMMED.
DON'T DO IT.
AND LIKE THAT OTHER GUY SAID, LET US KNOW WHO IT IS.

I had to pay $200 to work at my company. But what they did was take $50 out of the first four paychecks. They did not tell me I had to pay the money up front. The $200 was for background checks and uniform deposit. I will get $80 back on the uniform deposit if I leave the company and the uniforms are returned in good condition. The company is too cheap to refund us the money on the background checks, but in an 8% unemployment area, it's the only job I could find.

I work in the security industry and I found out that other companies in security do the same thing; they charge the new hire for the cost of conducting the background checks.

This job is not a good one, but it does pay the bills.

It is by no means a common practice. If the employer feels they have to do a background check, it's their choice and you should not have to pay for it.

Note also that you are asked for cash or money order, as opposed to, say, a check.

No, it is not "common." In fact, it's rather cheeky. If they don't want you badly enough to risk the bucks for a background check, then you should hesitate to hook your wagon to that team, kiddo!
And any promise to reimburse the fee does sound like a scam. Do they also offer to pay "interest" on this $100 you are fronting them?

No. you should never pay for anything to get a job. Its a scam and you should actually consider reporting them. What is going to happen is that they will say there was something in your background check they didn't like and will not hire you. and since you did not make it to the training they are not going to return your money.

Whats the name of the company..Enlighten us.

I've had to pay for a background check, but never $100. That seems excessive. Find out who does their background checks first, just to make sure.

Even if it wasn't a scam, which it most surely is, it should tell you just how cheap this employer is!!Trust your gut instincts and walk!
