"Im a uniter not a divider." This was a Bush catchphrase, a mantra. It was shorthand for his claim that he engaged in positive, not negative, politics and could heal a political culture ripped apart by the bitter ideological and partisan combat of the Clinton years. Yet during the 2000 presidential campaign and the Florida fracas, Bush and his lieutenants engaged in down-and-dirty and divisive political maneuvers. Just ask Senator John McCain, Bushs main Republican opponent, whose record on veterans affairs was falsely attacked by a Bush surrogate and who was accused falsely by the Bush campaign of opposing research for breast cancer. As president-elect, Bush nominated one of the most divisive ideologues in Washington, former Senator John Ashcroft, to be attorney general. During a pre-inauguration interview, Bush acknowledged that he expected Ashcroft to be a lightning rod. But would-be uniters-not-dividers do not shove lightning rods up the backsides of their opponents. Another example: during the 2002 congressional campaign, Bush accused Democratswho differed with him on employment rules for the new Department of Homeland Securityof sacrificing national security for their own petty purposes. He did this to help elect Republicans to office. Such a move was well within his rights as a political player, but not the action of a fellow who cares more about uniting than dividing.

Would you call what's going on in Iraq & Ahghanistan evil or saint like? Because if you consider it evil then you feel the same way as President Bush & many people across the world do! Therefore you should see that Bush is a uniter. He is trying to get the world at peace. I think that is something we are in desperate need of. If we all agree that what the middle eastern people are doing is wrong & sinful, then why not support President Bush's descions in trying to end it?

bush didnt divide, pissmoaners did. bush united the nation to fight against something.... people got tired of trying and started pointing fingers and asking "are we there yet" half way through the ride.

you cant make everyone happy, and unity is a joke in this world, searching for, and assuming anything different is an injustice to your intelligence.

I suggest you take up poetry.

He refused to go along with the French in selling arms to Iraq and then the French refused to abide to the U.N. imbargo to Iraq. Seems like the French were and are the ones who has divided the world and not president Bush.

He didn't lie, exactly. He has been a uniter -- unfortunately most of the people have united AGAINST him and his policies :)

Bottom line is, he is a POLITICIAN first and a moral man second, if at all. And politicians have an uncanny tendency to prevaricate, fudge, shade, spin and alter the truth to fit their circumstances, and in order to get elected and gain power. The old saying remains true: "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

Because, as Governor of Texas, he held his hand out to the Democrats, and they accepted it, and worked together for the betterment of Texas.

But when he arrived in DC and offered his hand to the Dems, they spit on it. Because with the election of Bush, it meant that the Dems were the complete minority party, out of the WH and minority in both houses of Congress. So, it is more important that they regain political power than it is to do what is right or good for America.

Did you expect anything else? Politicians lie. Plain and simple. Bush has lied about practically everything, he did it to get elected, to get the votes he needed from congress, to get reelected, to get poll numbers up, to get a republican congress, to get his war in Iraq, etc.
