Courses in college are generally worth from 1-4 units of credit. These units are usually directly tied to how many hours the course meets per week.

In order to major in a field, a department may require that students take a certain number of units of study in that field.

Minors also may require a certain number of units of study in order to qualify for the major.

Finally, a certain total number of units of study (also called credit hours) are always required in order to receive a degree upon graduating.

For example, at my university, 128 units (credit hours) are required for qualifying for graduation. Most majors require between 30 and 50 units (credit hours) of courses in that field of study in order to complete the major.
