There is a very long list of people who should at the very least recieve an honorable mention in this rundown but the list is sooo incredibly long it would be an exceptional pain to do and take up more space than most would be happy with---so I'll confine myself to the two that are without a doubt the creme de la creme

Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix-----I have been fortunate in being able to see both of these gentlemen twice in my lifetime---Eric once with Cream and once on his own and Jimi before his death in two of the most incrediable displays of string work I have ever witnessed ( and I've seen alot of guitarists)

Stevie Ray was among the top of the heap in the blues-rock area and on three seperate occasions I saw him --- once in concert and twice--in Austin Texas he just walked into a little club down on 6th street with a couple of people --chatted with the folks who were playing and stepped up --plugged in and zap an hour and a half the first time and over two hours the second time--just nailed everybody back !!!!

It's somewhere between Jimi Hendrix and Roy Clark.......I mean, these 2 guys could actually make a guitar talk to you...in English or Spanish!

Jimi Hendrix. I just like the way he could do so much playing the guitar and you could hear what he was doing very well!

Everyone you picked is awesome at guitar and argualbly the greatest. Its hard to determine the greatest ever, mabey Les Paul, because of his contribution to the music world. You also have to argue the classical guitarist, I don't know any, but I know there pretty amazing on the guitar.

James Marshall Hendrix; calling him a hack uncovers your ignorance. He did more for rock guitar than anyone before or since.

if you are talking rock and roll guitarists there are two: chuck berry and bo diddley. every other rock/blues guitarist previously mentioned here built upon what these two invented.
that being said honorable mention goes to b.b. king for blues guitarist and charlie christian for jazz guitarist.
p.s. kudos to frozengrocer for mentioning django reinhardt. very bold choice. and to whichwayisup isn't roy clark primarily a banjo player? an extremely talented one nonetheless.
