I've never attended Burning Man myself, but I've got friends called "burners" (slang term for those who go to Burning Man every year) & some of my friends are musicians who perform at this very unusual festival. From what I understand, you go there for the art, music & mainly the "community" - there's a real sense of bonding among the different "tribes," all according to whatever your interest or flavor might be.

Here in the Bay Area, you can tell when it's almost time for Burning Man. "Art cars" start popping up everywhere, as well as multi-colored hair & unusual costumes & faerie wings. In my neighborhood last year, I actually thought some of my neighbors were moving out - that is, until I noticed their "moving van" consisted of theatrical props & LOTS of bottled water. Burners take Burning Man very seriously, and are veterans at preparing their trek into the desert (very hot during the day & cold at night).

One of the funniest "spoofs" of Burning Man I ever saw was on an episode of "Reno 911," when the cops were dressed up in little tights & butterfly wings while working undercover & their car broke down in the desert.

no, but i went to a related flipside event in texas. a good friend goes to burning man every year. You have to bring everything you will need, like for camping. there are no stores there. you have to bring all your water and food for the whole time. you have to be responsible for your own survival. it could be hot or cold. you have to contribute something (no observers allowed). They operate on the gift economy. I think it is really fun for mostly young people who like high stimulus. Try to go with a group that has gone before and has experience.

I've heard good and bad things about it. I think you just have to go, and make up your own mind.
