No, you certainly can't just copy the OS files over. You need to install an operating system. That means buying a new one, really, because it would be illegal to install twice from the same disk, wouldn't it? That doesn't mean it's not possible, of course.

You may like to consider trying a free OS such as one of the many excellent versions of Linux which are available. It depends what you want to use the PC for, but if it is for Internet browsing, wordprocessing and other office functions, all of that kind of software is also available as freeware for Linux.

If you're talking about a Microsoft OS, unless you have the proper license to copy the OS, you cannot legally copy one OS software to two separate computers. (Consult your licensing agreement.)

If you're using an Open Source OS like Linux, or FreeBSD, etc. then you can easily use a disk imaging product (Norton Ghost Clones) for Linux and copy it that way.

By the way, on Windows XP, Windows Product Activation will not allow you to transfer the software from one machine to another without calling Microsoft. For you to do this you must call up Microsoft and "de-activate" your other machine and only then will they give you the proper Activation Key for you to use the new computer.

Get another copy of XP Home from Wal-Mart and save yourself a lot of headaches! Believe me! Been there, done that!
