Male infertility (or a low sperm count, in this case) doesn't necessarily mean that he doesn't produce sperm, but just that he isn't producing enough for you to get pregnant. The average ejaculate consists of about 350 million sperm (or 100 million sperm per mL of semen), of which less than 1% will actually reach the egg. Because of this, men with less than 10 million motile sperm per mL (about 35 million total) are still likely to be sterile.

Another interesting fact is that about 10% of all sperm in an ejaculate are immobile/abnormal. These can have two heads, no tails, etc, but are generally unable to pass through the mucus of the cervical canal because of their lack of motility and do not fertilize an egg. If a male's abnormal sperm count exceeds 20%, it can also have an effect on his fertility.

But don't get discouraged! It isn't impossible for you to have children with this man; men with low sperm counts have been able to impregnate women, plus you always have the option of IVF or adoption. Best of luck!

A low sperm count means that the number of sperms in a single ejaculation is less than the normal required for the process of fertilization. Getting pregnant in this situation is very low.

Some people just produce a smaller amount, and this can make it harder to conceive children. A doctor does a sperm count and determines if the count is normal or not.
