Both.
It is required of you to do good deeds, but you should want to do them, as well.

In truth Mitzvah comes from the word SIVAH or command. However Gods commandments are not to be confused with the infantile idea of a commandment say from a parent, that if you dont do A you'll be punished. There is no idea of force involved from an outside force. What is meant by commandment is that these ACTIONS are a manifestation of an abstract philosophical idea. With that we can get a better understanding, that yes you are commanded, youre commanded to have certain KNOWLEDGE that will affect your actions by forcing the mind over the emotions, and what is commanding you, the fact that GOD said this is the REALITY of what is good for man OBJECTIVELY. However you must use your free will to make that decision

first of all, the word is miztvah, not mitvah. And is means commandment not going a good deed. Just like bat mitzvah means daughter of the commandments. Thought i would clear that up for you.

The word is Mitzvah -- and it is a commandment -- both literally and colloquially. Though you are commanded -- this does not negate your freedom of choice -- to choose whether or not to obey (as with any other type of law). If you do not obey -- there are obviously consequences, depending on the type of Mitzvah. You can disobey by either committing an active act (stealing) or passive (not helping an elderly person across the road) -- and the ramifications are different.

I do them because I want to, not because someone "commands" me to. That is the whole meaning of good deed! You do it out of the goodness of your heart, not because someone commands you to do it.

I have been questioning what 'good' means. What would my life be like if instead of labeling things as good/bad, they just 'were'?
