Though it's speculation, it was probably because of Materazzi's taunting and his less than subtle nipple grabbing. Zidane is usually a cool tempered player, but when opponents insult his heritage or family he explodes: in 2002 he headbutted someone for a racial comment and prior to that he punched a fan for the same thing. Materazzi has a track record of unrelenting taunting; with the french dominating that whole half, he must have been frustrated and insulted Zidane without regard for decency. I believe Zidane was provoked, and though I think he could have handled it differently, and it was mostly Materazzi's fault for tactless racial comments during such a game.
And addressing the idiot who insulted Zidane for being French, a sore loser, Zidane is of Algerian descent (this caused his anger at Materazzi's terrorist comment) and Le Bleu's dominated Azzuri for the last quarter of the first half and almost all of the second half, Zidane's ejection didn't even affect the French control of the game until penalty kicks. The French were in contention the entire game and should've got a second penalty kick in the second half before the end GK's.

I personally believe more efforts must be made to enforce a zero tolerance policy towards racism. Zidane has never done anything of this nature until recently. There is sufficient evidence supporting that the Italian player Materazzi said something strongly offensive. Part of the vision of the FIFA World Cup is to stop racism and the actions here clearly display the failure of that attempt. This would sound extreme, but suppose if there were audio equipment to listen in on the players talking to enforce such a conjecture (zero tolerance policy). If not, then no person should complain about racial slurs, references, etc. It is a dishonourable means of winning. The rights, cultural identities, etc. must be respected and protected. The uttering statements made by the Italian were vulgar attempts (using current events to insult) to infuriate Zidane to better the chances for winning. A very slimeballish way to victory (lacks integrity). For those who do not like racial references, do not even complain. Accept the insults you give to return to you. The expression "What goes around, comes around" still eludes you.

he head butted him beacause of a few reasons in my opinion.
one, materazzi MAY have made a racist comment. nobody knows for sure except zidane and materazzi. unless they both tell the same story, no one will ever know for sure what was actually said. they both have a good reason to lie if the story differs (materazzi may not want to be seen as a racist IF indeed the comment he made was of that nature, and zidane may want to try to save his dignity by claiming that it was a racist comment, because that is the only way he could gain any sympathy for his disgusting act of senseless violence).
he also may have headbutted materazzi because he was frustrated over gigi buffon's SPECTACULAR save off of his head ball. any other goalie in the world could not have saved that, and im sure he knew it. that would be frustrating as all hell. combine that with his mild collision with materazzi, and we have a violent explosion.
zidane has a history of these outbursts, but i was surprised that he would disappoint his team and his country on his final international match. hes been around long enough to know the rules and the consequences of his actions. what he did was insulting to himself, his teammates, his oponents, the game officials (as he looked around to make sure they werent watching) and to FIFA. the fact that he won the golden ball was especially disgraceful. you would think that a football legend like zidane would carry a little more respect. it is an unfortunate end to a fortunate career.
by the way - that is not the reason france lost. cannavaro and buffon were all over the french attack - even if they did have more possession, it means little if you cannot produce anything with that possession. pirlo and gatuso dominated the mid-field battle. italy won because they are the better team. they were world class players all tournament. nobody deserves the cup more than them. even if zidane had been one of the shooters, the player who missed his shot on france still would have been in the line up (he scored the winner for the eurocup, for those of you who dont know), and he still would have missed, and france still would have lost. as for the penalty shot france 'should' have had? well, they should not have had the shot in which zidane scored to begin with, as that was clearly not an intentional foul...so we will call it even. the better team won - case and point.

Materazzi surely told something really bad to Zidane, coz Zidane is a cool-tempered guy! He wouldn't head-butt Materazzi for nothing! Must have been a racist remark, or anything else. We can only speculate, but must have been bad enough for a guy like Zidane to lose his temper.

Everybody knows that MATERAZZI is a BIG and DIRTY racist, he said to ZIDANE (his parents are from Algeria) : ALL ARABIC PEOPLE and ALL MUSLIM PEOPLE are DIRTY TERRORIST!!! Come on, do you think a normal person could say that???? we're in 2006, it's more than football! it's completely ashamed to see a racist like MATERAZZI with the WORLD CUP! FIFA should be VERY VERY VERY ashamed about this guy!
ALL ARABIC people and all MUSLIM people are not TERRORIST!

Zidane head-butted Materazzi because the latter insulted the first and abused his religion "Islam".

zizou has had an outstanding career and wanted to go out with honor he wouldnt have just head butted the italian matterazzi aka matternazi for no reason im sure matterazzi issued a racist comment which was very provocative that zizou was forced to react n such a manner. a wise man once said savages dont learn from words but they learn from blows im sure matterazzi will think twice before saying something racist the next time.
