For a few months I just thought my missed period was bc of stress and some things going on. Lately, I've started having some dull aches and sharp pains. I know that I'm not pregnant. I've been trying to get into the OB/Gyn for almost a week and the earlist appt I've found anywhere is late August. What do I do in the meantime if symptoms get worse. My insurance won't cover much for an ER visit; and I'll be out hundreds. I let them know all the problems when I made the appt, but Is it appropriate to call and let them know it's urgent if the pain gets worse or what? Thanks

Yes, it is appropriate and responsible for you to call the GYN and let them know this is urgent. You can ask them to call you if there are any cancellations, but you have to be ready, willing, and able to clear off your schedule at a moment's notice.

Contacting your primary care physician and trying to get in there asap would be an EXCELLENT idea. She can do some preliminary tests, the results of which you should get for yourself as soon as they are available so that you can actually bring them with you to your eventual GYN appointment.

Bloodwork and ultrasound would be likely tests, and probably a pregnancy test. Yes, I know, no chance. They'd want to be sure though.

If you have no PCP and are still hanging on the GYN appointment, consider going to a women's health clinic. Again, they can do preliminary stuff to rule out the immediately threatening stuff.

People who make under a certain amount of money qualify for free emergency care at some hospitals through the Hill-Burton Program and other low income subsidy assistance programs. I don't know the details of it but I have a friend who is insured but who was hospitalized overnight with a $250 copay. She ended up not having to pay it b/c she makes so little money. Look into the low income free care in the meantime in case you do have an acute worsening of your symptoms.

How are you so sure you're not pregnant, if there is no cycle for 4 mths. But it could be something like PID(pelvic inflammatory disease), kidney infection, ovarian cyst, uterine cyst. Do you have a fever? Fever usually indicates and infection, somewhere. Other than the dull aches and sharp pains, how do you feel? Is there any possibility that you have contracted any type of Sexually Trasmiited Disease?
Are there any Free Women's clinics in your area? If the Gyn is your regular doctor, and you don't have a history of problems, then do what you can to ease the pain, unless it gets worse.

yes, call them and let them know if it's urgent and the pain gets worst. also, the aches and pains might have nothing to do with you missing your period, so a primary care physician could be useful, but it's your decision. sorry that your insurance sounds like crap, but if this gets serious, i'd recommend being out money to the other result. also, most doctor offices will be okay if you make monthly payments and won't refer it to collection. good luck and best wishes.
