Maybe. It turns out that when he was playing for Juventus he did the same exact thing to a Hamburg player during a Chamipions League game. And he stomped on a Saudi player's leg.
Personally, I think he was really pissed because Buffon saved his header and the game was still tied. He thought he would end his career lifting the World Cup, but that wasn't the case. He was nervous and took whatever the other player may have told him too personally. Now, at that point in the game, when PK's were getting closer and closer, that was really dumb. He should have thought that his team was going to need him for the PK's. I wonder if he ever cared about his teammates, his fans, and their hopes.
Of course, the French coach, his teammates, and even the French president rose to his defense. With him still being a hero, and a scapegoat (the Italian player provoked him) their second place has a less bitter taste.

NO!!! don't you think that such a classy player as zidane had to be really ticked off to pull a stunt like that. we probably can't even fathom the rude words that materazzi said to zizou. after all these years of skill and class from zidane don't you think he was insulted more than once from opposing players? and don't you think he controlled himself well and went on to score and crush those players? now don't you think there is a limit as to how much you can offend another person? don't you think materazzi MUST have crossed zizou's line of patience in order for zidane to act that way? i do.... he doesn't have anger problems materazzi got what he deserved....you never see such a classy and legendary player like zidane act that way....something must have been seriously wrong with what materazzi said or did to zizou for him to act that way....use your commen sense...it's not in zidane's nature to act like that....and i DO NOT think zinedine zidane has self control or anger problems....if he did, don't you think the world would have realised it once he started playing professionally? don't you think it would have been apparant in his style of play? none of it adds up and your arugment is completely irrelevent to the amazing player zinedine zidane is and you have no evidence to back up your statement....do you believe this? i do.

no i dont because have you seen him do this before? no but the Italian player held his arms behind his backs then let him go then he had the nerve to say stuff to him. zidane got pissed off and retaliated. and one thing he realized what he did and apologized for it no red card. i was supporting Italy because France won Portugal by the penalty kick but i think it was the Italian players fault and i felt sorry for zidane it was his last game and he had to go of because of the stupid Italian player (no offense) but viva italia!!!

it was the whole thing about the game, he was probably nervous, anxious, who knows what the guy had told him...he didn't had self control ¨at the moment¨ but that's it, I don't think he has ¨problems¨, though.

Yeah! totally that was awful sportsmanship in whart he did he could have really hurt the other player he definetely has issues! although i wish i could know what the other player said to him that could have really ticked him off like it did....
