When did they start throwing people in jail for being broke? I don't see the homless in jail for being poor. I'm not in jail for being poor. I don't think that is the norm but I don't know.

I think as long as you are paying something on the bill they can't touch you at all . My Mom had people hitting her for money and she started paying them 5 dollars a month and they got mad , but couldn't do a thing about it . I don't think you can go to jail for a bill unless they take you to court first , although laws are different in other states . I'm in Alabama .
God bless you and your family !

Probably not jailed but she'll most likely get court summons if she doesn't do anything or ignore the debt. If she is having problems paying the amount, she can go to http://www.ccs.org.sg/home.html
for help and guidance. CCS will most likely help her talk to the HP company to set-up a repayment schedule too.

Jail is usually only an option for failure to pay child support/alimony or if she owes a debt due to fraud.

I would be very hesitant about contributing money to her, especially if you don't have a whole lot to work with.

She's probably exaggerating. I think the worst that would happen is it would ruin her credit rating and she might have to declare bankruptcy.
