Most companies in the UK have a sick policy: You can report Uncertificated Sick and be absent from work for a few days, usually up to 5. Certificated Sick, is when you have a Doctor's Certificate which states the nature of your illness/injury, when you started to be unfit for work and the period up to when it is considered you will remain unfit for work. This may be subsequently extended....... It also helps with claiming National Insurance from the Government..............

I think you use it to stop working for a while. For instance, if you found you had a long-term illness, you could produce this doctors certificate, and the company you work for has to give you time off, with pay for a while, then with reduced amounts of pay. Eventually, the idea is that you get well and go back to work.
