Beta,vhs tapes and DVD and Tivo are dead items. What will be the next popular equipment for recording television programming?

PVRs / DVRs are the current best way. As long as computers are around, I don't see this type of recording going away soon. The only change might be to how we store the data.

The only other thing I have heard of is some service that allows you to store the shows you want on their server instead of at your box. This is not going to work because of the legal issues and storage issues. Plus, this way the networks can decide to only allow you to store a show for a certain amount of time. This is not a good idea and will never be accepted by the viewers.

Well, the thing about Tivo that will not really ever go away is that it uses a Hard Drive. They keep making larger and faster hard drives so Tivoesque things will exist for some time. The next thing will be online storage of Terabytes of data per household. Every home will be hardwired or wirelessly connected to the WWW so that they can access this data.
