Bartholomew was one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus. Bartholomew (Greek "Βαρθολομαιος," Transliterated "Bartholomaios") comes from the Aramaic bar-Tôlmay, meaning son of Tolmay (Ptolemy) or son of the furrows (perhaps a ploughman). Source Wikopedia

Info_Please may have the best explanation for the origin of the name Bart. It originated from the Bible as Bartholomew, one of Jesus' disciples.
Not only is it a name for Homer's son on the Simpsons, Bart is also German for "beard" and it is known as the Bay Area Rapid Transit in San Francisco.

Bart comes from the name Bartholomew, one of Jesus' Apostles. It is actually a surname, meaning "son of Ptolemy" in Aramaic. Ptolemy is a very unusual surname for a Judean of that time, since it was the name of one of the generals of Alexander the Great, and thus Greek (not Jewish) in origin.

Okay, I realize that Bart is short for Bartholemew, etc. However, the name originates long before Jesus and his disciples.
Bart is a Hebrew name (Jesus and his followers were Jews) which originally meant "Son of Tolmai."
