It is unfortunate that animals have to be kept in zoos. But with their natural habitation shrinking on a massive scale where else is there for them to go, how else are there species supposed to survive? If there are no zoos and wild life preserves then everything is liable to go the way of the dodo bird.

I was just reading an article in Time the other week about this issue. Several of the interviewed zoo staff and experts felt that certain animals do well in zoos, while others don't.
I believe it was agreed that animals who roam over large distances are not compatible with captivity. Elephants, giraffes, gazelle, and bears were all named, if I recall correctly. It was argued that other species, like lions, tigers, and primates all do reasonably well in captivity. Big cats sleep for most of the day and can be mentally stimulated with different objects and techniques in their enclosures. Same for primates- several of the experts felt that they do well if given enough mental stimulation.
I don't know enough about zoo programs to have an educated opinion on the matter, but I thought I'd point that out in case anyone is interest in digging up the article for a look. It was in the June 2006 edition of Time Magazine in the Science section.

According 2 me the animals must not be kept in a zoo *** humans v really find very difficult to sit in palace for an hour or 2 .the animals also must have the freedom to move around .if the people are interested to view the animals they must b taken in a jeep for a jungle then it is like the people also enjoy as well as the animals they don't harm as until we humans disturb them.so there r places like bandipur which is the way i said near Mysore in karnataka.so i say it is wrong to have the animals in a cage.

I think it is cruel to have animals in a zoo. They were doing alright in the wild before we came along and took them out of it for money and public viewing.

It's cruel and unusual leave them alone and i hate the Bastards who do that. What if you were grazing in the grass and someone captured you and put you in a mysterious cage? would you be happy that you could stay in that one place?
