Afrikaans is one of 11 official languages in South Africa.
Afrikaans is not just spoken by whites but is the mother tongue of most coloureds or half cast people; it is also spoken by many Blacks as a second language.
Please guys; especially the Americans amongst you; who don,t seem to know much of anything outside the States.
Africa is not a country; it is a continent containing 50 countries; when president Bush said that Saddam Hussein had been buying Uranium...........................................In Africa; he was being a prat; as that sentence lumped all the countries together.
African is not a language; there are several thousand tribal languages spoken on the African continent; as well as English; French; Spanish and Portuguese.
I am not actually sure what the point of this question is.
Totsiens (Goodbye)

I cannot say that I do, but... Afrikaans is a West Germanic language mainly spoken in South Africa and Namibia with smaller numbers of speakers in Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Due to the emigration of many White South Africans, there are an additional ... an additional estimated 300,000 Afrikaans-speakers in the United Kingdom

I haven't yet stopped laughing at the smartarse who tried to correct you - Afrikaans? I think you mean 'African'. So much rank stupidity in once short phrase! Hey, idiot - who is it you think speaks 'African'? It's a continent, not a country. There is no language called 'African', whereas 'Afrikaans' is one of the national languages of South Africa. "You mean people who speak African"!!! You imebcile! Please, kid, don't have children. I'm worried about the gene pool.
If you want to hear Afrikaans spoken, and meet the people doing the speaking, try The Springbok Bar at 20 Bedford Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2E 9HP

Almost exclusively white South Africans. I can speak Dutch, but that's not the same, even though many Dutch think you can just replace the Dutch z with an s and make it Afrikaans. Try googling what you want on google.za: http://www.google.com/intl/af/
