For those of you who watched the World Cup on sunday, why do think he did that? My friends and I had a feeling he already wanted out when he first hurt his shoulder and was taken to the sidelines. you could tell he didn't wanna play anymore. The only reason he went back in was to make the fans happy. But why do you think he would do such a thing?

I do believe that Zidane may have been provoked by Materazzi. If you look at the video closely after Marco squeezed him on the chest there were some words exchanged but Zidane walks away. Then it looks like Materazzi might have said something and Zidane goes back to Materazzi and head butted him on the chest. While this incident is hardly Zidane’s first violent outburst it seems a bit odd for him to do that without being provoked.

I think Marco might have said something personal, something that really offended him. And quite honestly he may have well and truly been provoked. Materazzi is hardly a saint on the field.

As for the theory that Zidane wanted out because of his shoulder... i don't buy it. Zidane is one of the world's greatest players and on his last appearance before retiring. I'm sure he wanted to make his last game his best. But then again that didn't happen. I just hope that this incident doesn't eclipse this great player and everything he's done for the beautiful game.

I do not know why, but as a fan of France and Zidane, I was very disappointed!!! It was sick to see such a display and I was pleased to see the Red Card and actually as sad as this sounds, pleased to see Italy win.

Even today, I am disgusted by this headbutt. It has no place in the game.

Having said this, I hope to someday hear about why Zidane did this.

Ultimately, I hope this is NOT what Zidane get's remembered for, but unfortunately, given the Media today...I believe this will haunt the legend status of Zidane.

I'm angry he did that!
He of all should have known better!
He's a professional, right?
I know others can drive you out of your mind (believe me!!) but he had to be cool because he's such a role model to kids!!
It was his last game!!
And still he got the award from FIFA for being the best player...
Kids all over to world will think it's OK to react like that.

I thought the best of him...

I think that materazzi probably insulted him, and he held him pretty badly in the play before. I think that materazzi deserved a red card too, becuase you don't usually do that without intimidation.

I know that it was really bad spartsmanship for zidane to do that, but I think that materazzi deserved it, all of the italians deserve a big bruise in the chest.

as they say, he is dangerous 2 have on the field. i think he was just outraged. what horrible way 2 end ur career. that mistake will probably haunt him 4 the rest of, or a lot of the rest of, his life. i feel kinda sorry 4 the guy.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.

I learned that in pre-school.
