This sounds like a timing issue. If it has just started, seek out a reputable mechanic before something serious goes wrong. It may just be something simple and you could avoid a costly repair later, especially if the backfire starts a fire.

Ususally its a sign that the ignition or valve timing isn't set correctly. In order for the car to backfire through the carb an intake valve needs to be open when the sparkplug fires. Have the timing checked out.

The carburetor backfire is caused by four possibles problems.
1. The ignition timing fires the spark before the intake valve is closed. (The distributor timing is very far off or the wires to the spark plug are in the wrong order or arcing is occuring between wire or posts on the cap.).)
2. The cam timing is has the intake valve open at the wrong time. (The belt or chain has slipped.)
3. The intake valve is leaking badly. (Cracked, burned, bent, or very far out of adjustment intake valve)
4. The exhaust valve on one cylinder is not opening, (damaged valve train on the exhaust side with the intake working normally.)

Timing is probably off. sounds like it's retarded. if it's a ford you can advance it by turning the distributor clock wise or if it's advanced to much go counter clock wise. you can set it real close by turning it until engine smooths out. if it doesen't start good, you may have gone too far or not enough. keep moving it a tiny bit until it starts good. If you have an older car with Points , the points could be set wrong.

If the air doesnt come in through the venturi and you pour gas out into the cylinders by pumping it, you will cause the engine to backfire as soon as it can get air. that means that it will spark, ignight a little bit of it, but as soon as the intake valve opens and the air hits that fuel, KABOOM.

extra advantageous than possibly with that many miles on the motor vehicle it is going to possibly be a worn timing belt or chain. the tooth positioned on on the belts and slip purely adequate to reason it to backfire. it may additionally be a number of the spark plug cord leaping hearth. With this many miles nonetheless it quite is extra advantageous than possibly the 1st.
