Animal Cruelty can be a felony in many states. It's not considered nearly as serious a crime as injuring or killing a human being, however. Isn't that really your question, how much an animal has to be like a human being before they should be protected to the same extent as human beings?

To harm any living thing just for the sake of harming it,is wrong.
It doesn't matter if its a monkey or a bug. Everything has its place in the world.
Animals that are similiar to us in either look or action, seem to be much more unlikely to be harmed for no reason. The motivations of various people as to why they harm animals, are endless. Sometimes for food, or testing of cosmetic products,it seems that many animals are doomed to a sad and quick life.

Humans are always going to feel like a superior being, therefore by harming lesser animals it makes us feel greater.

Until humans realize they're animals too... And forget about their little lives and jobs and all that emo crap, there will be harm for the animals.

I don't think human beings will ever accept other animals that way until they can think fully for themselves and be under jurisdiction of the legal system.

Animals should never be harmed. Just because we are smarter than them, that doesn't mean we should treat them badly.
