I am looking for aggregate stats on formal employer/employee-type organizations, such as all businesses, hospitals, schools, etc. I have not been able to find it broken down that way where people working on farms, the self-employed, small family run businesses, etc., were excluded. Thanks for your help.

Pretty much the main source of this type of data is from the government's BLS.
The employment data is located here: http://stats.bls.gov/bls/employment.htm
I couldn't really find anything specifically on "small family run businesses" because that type of category is a bit subjective and tough to search for.
