The Braves absolutely will not catch the Mets. They're not too late to make a run at the wild card, though, even though that gets harder when you have to pass quite a few teams, like they do.
I like Topher's thinking. If the Cards are the wild card, that means the Reds won the central. Let's hope so.

Theoretically, yes, there are 80 games left. Realistically, highly unlikely. Let's say the Mets, who are at 53w/36l now, only play .500 ball the rest of the season (they're playing .596 now). The will finish at about 93/76. Atlanta is at 40/49. They would have to win 53 just to catch up, losing only 27, or play about .667 ball for 2.5 months. It is unlikely ANY team could keep that up, and the Braves aren't what they used to be. They have some real pitching issues. Even if they totally fix their pitching staff & bullpen over the All Star Break, the Mets are too far ahead. But they could easily catch Philly for second and whittle down the Mets lead, and qualify for Wild Card. Very Easily, they're only one game behind Philly now.

As a Braves fan....it's not beyond the realm of possibility, but very improbable. For the Braves to catch the Mets, the other teams would all have to roll over and play dead. Actually, I don't even see them making the playoffs this year. The bullpen - such as it is - is way too weak.

I say YES!! The Mets are known for folding (I mean it's a NY team) and the Braves have to have a better second half. I hedge my bet, however, based on the Braves' getting some bullpen help. They need a good middle man AND a closer.
Go Braves!!

Definatley not too late--season is half over, still tons of games left to play. However, the Braves cannot go into a 10 game losing streak--then I would say it's over.

They are what, 12.5 games behind, or they were yesterday morning. There's still half a season left, and I'd like to say they could be caught, but the Mets are on fire this year. They've really got a thing going, and I think they'll win the division. Believe me, I'm a Philles fan and it pains me to write this, but I think it's the truth.

NO I DON'T THINK THAT THE BRAVES CAN CATCH THE METS. THE METS ARE HAVING A GOOD SEASON. BUT, TO LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN.

Unless the Mets collapse (and if history tells us anything, they might) their best bet is to look at the wild card.
