We all know that Cypriot Turks voted for a government supporting solution, and also know what Greeks do cause the conflict to be in existence...

Turkey never invaded cyprus. They intervened to stop the ethnic cleansing of the turkish cypriots.
I am british and live in the TRNC, i cant cross the boarder into the south anymore for fear of getting arrested by Greek cypriots because i work for an estate agent and people really want people like this running an island?
People seem to sode with the Greek Cypriots because they lost home and were forced to flee.... the same happened to the Turkish Cypriots but no one ever mentions that.
Did you know that Paphos was once a turkish place? Take a look at old road maps and see how the Turkish names have diminished to make way for the Greek names. Larnaca airport is built on former Turkish ground.
This arguement is never going to be resolved untill people stop being so one sided. I suggest people have a watch of the documentary "Voices Of Blood".

I agree with hawaiian_sho. (Well done for getting to the rally.. i would have loved to have gone but wasnt in the country and i've also signed the petion.)
North Cyprus do indeed exist and people should just accept it and move on... both sides lost and no one has won and i seriously suggest that people read up on an unbiased version of the history of cyprus.

Whilst there are complexities to the issue, at its simplest the Turks invaded Cyrpus illegally and any solution to the problem of Cyprus, including the admission of Turkish Cyprus and indeed Turkey itself, to the EU depends upon greater recogniton of this than has yet taken place in Turkey or Turkish Cyprus.

It does not held that Turkish Cyprus has harboured some pretty dodgy people duirng the division of the island, specifically in relation to financial wheeling-dealing.

We all want to see a resolution to the current sad state of Cyprus, but your question makes me, as an EU citizen living far from either Turkey or Greece, think that people affected need to do more to understand each other's point of view for this to happen. My personal impression is that if the EU is treating anybody unjustly over this issue it is probably not Turks or Turkish Cypriots, not least because the EU is bending over backwards towards Turkey because of affairs on the Middle East. Perhaps this is another answer for you: EU Governments cannot act more favourably towards Turkey and Turkish Cyrprus because their people will not let them do so.

I agree that it's a complex issue, with Greek and Turkish Cypriots both having claims on the island. Fact is though, the EU are there to represent EU countries, and Turkey is not one of them. Also, in common with every other body in the world apart from the Turkish government, the EU doesn't recognise the TRNC.

Until someone comes up with a plan to reconcile the two communities (under a single Cypriot government?) and settle all the outstanding land claims, you'll never have a peaceful solution.

I agree with Cyprusguy, i mean how can you justify having tens of thousands of Turkish troops on the island when they are talking about peace? It is hard to trust them when they dont back up their words with actions.

Put it this way, if you were suddenly forced at gunpoint to leave your home and all your possessions, 30% of the country was captured by these people, and though you own the land on which your house stands legally (which more often than not belongs to families for generations) and told that you can never return because a turkish cypriot/turk family has now been living in your house for the past 35+ years, how would you feel? Would you trust people that still have that huge military presence on the island after all this time? I am not saying that all cypriot turks are to blame because they all lived together quite peacefully for many years. But i would not trust turkey as far as i could kick them to be quite honest.

Turkey invaded Cyprus and avoided punishment for it because of its friends (see US). The will of the Turkish Cypriots to reunite our island is both welcomed and supported. Greek Cypriot also want to see our country reunited. What was rejected was a perpetual presence of the Turkish army on the island. The remaining of thousands of settlers , the looting of individual property rights and an apprtheid system that classifie citizens by language, race and religion. Greek Cypriots cannot cater to the interests of Turkey. We will resolve our problem with the T/C. We cannot accomodate Turkey in Cyprus ever. the Cyprus government not only has the right but also the duty in the EU to push to get rid of Turkeys influence on the island permanently

The Turkish Cypriot's still haven't got their reward for voting to reunify the island. The Turkish Cypriots are embargoed, and therefore the countries embargoing it are infringing human rights. It's been going on for quite a while, too (over 40 years). Every government in the world (except for Turkey's) is prejudiced towards North Cyprus, and in favour of the Greek Cypriots, instead. North Cyprus exists, and they should just accept it. Visit http://www.embargoed.org/ for more info, and sign the petition.

It's a coincidence that you ask this question, because there was a protest in London, yesterday, which I attended.

Simply?
Turkey illegally invaded the island, never apologised or made attempts to give it back to the greek-cypriots or even acknowledged they were in the wrong. Give the island back to its rightful owners, apologise and compensate and then we'll see if you can join

It's a shame that Turk's get taught a completely false and self serving vision of history. Turky has been given more than fair treatment by the EU, and should be grateful that the international community talks to and aknowledges them.
