its the way the brain works. If you see something traumtic, your brain is much more likely to remember it than say remembering something positive.

I think the reason is psychological.
Basically we can learn more from bad things that happen to us and it is the bad things that are the ones we wish we could forget.
I suppose it could be an in-built defense system whereby we want to learn from our mistakes although we wish to forget when they happen the brain decides us to remind us when there is a leason to be learned from it that is relevant.

Of course that is just my opinion and not based on any fact but I think it makes sense.

As for the forgetting what we want to remember part of it, i must say i slightly disagree with that.
Personally i tend not to forget the good things that have happened to me and those are the things i want to remember but maybe I am just different from others. lol

Anyway, the brain seems to be a very complex thing and one thing is for sure, the more somebody thinks and ponders on something, the more stuff they become confused about and the more they forget. Which can lead to confusion in general.
It is for that reason that i think that the bad parts tend to be remembered for the longest period because they tend to be the biggest memories.

Sorry for babbling on now, and i doubt this has helped but hey you never know. lol

a person tends to remember the bad and forget the good, the best way to f orget a bad memory is to make new good memories and allow the old ones to mix with the new

You remember what you want to forget because your mind is set on it. Think about it- if I tell you not to think about a red dragon, what are you going to do? By thinking to yourself "don't think about a red dragon" you have already thought about a red dragon.

We remember those things that make the biggest impact on us. Sometimes they are bad events. Also the more we talk, or think, about something the fresher it is in our memories.
