RAM has nothing to do with your files. RAM is the memory space that programs work in. For example, if you are at the library, the shelves are your hard drive, where the data is stored. The desk that you sit at and take notes is the RAM of the computer, the space you use to work. The bigger the desk, the more programs (books) you can have open at one time and use. Just because you get a new, bigger desk, doesn't mean the books disappear and are lost, they just go back to their shelf.

What are you planning on replacing?
You can certainly replace the RAM in your machine with a larger RAM
module. To do this, you'll need to turn your machine off, open it up,
replace the SIMM (or DIMM or whatever it is), put it all back together
and turn it on. It should boot with all of your existing files.
You may find that it is not possible to add or replace the RAM modules
in your machine - so you have to get another one. In that case, the new
machine won't have any of the old data on it, so you'll need to figure out
how to transfer the information.
You can probably connect the old drive to the new system, but it will
require opening the machine, etc.
When you buy a new computer, many stores will provide (for some
cost) a service whereby information is transferred from your old machine
to your new one.

No. Memory is not the same as file storage. Your files are stored on your hard drive. Changing your memory will have no affect on your hard drive.

if you are only replacing RAM than you will not lose any data. Your data is stored on your hard disk. RAM is merely a temporary container for processes that are in use.

Ram is random access memory. Your files should be stored in ROM which is read only memory. Upgrade you will be happier.
