I'm new to baseball and I noticed that when a player strikes out at bat he still has to run to first base why is that?

If the catcher drops the ball at the 3rd strike call, the runner can advance to the base unless they tag him with the ball or throw the ball to first for the out.

If the catcher drops the ball on the third strike, the batter is allowed to run to first base. They usually don't get there but sometimes they do. If a batter reaches first, it still counts as a strikeout for the pitcher but goes down as an error charged to the catcher. It is not recorded as an out.

That's only on a dropped third strike.

If the third strike is dropped by the catcher (or bounces before it hits the glove), the play is alive.

If the runner makes it to first before being tagged, or the ball is thrown down to first, he's actually safe at first.

In little league, some coaches actually teach their young players to run it out without even looking to see if the ball was dropped. It's a good habbit, especially with young players who commonly make these mistakes.

On the third strike, the runner can run to first base if the ball is dropped by the catcher.

He only runs to 1st base if the catcher drops the ball and 1st base is unoccupied. The catcher is credited with a put out. If he doesn't catch the ball the batter is not put out.

If the catcher drops the ball on the third strike, then the batter can try to advance to first, The catcher then must throw him out at first.

The batter usually doesn't make it to first, but occasionally he does.
