Getting points for answers gives people the illusion of a competition as if it was a game or a contest about knowledge and also about good advices.
It is addictive because people in general have an uncontrollable tendency to try to reply when reading a question, even if it is not asked to us; that is to say that questions directed towards the general replier make us want to speak, giving personal opinions, sharing individual perspectives and in doing so showing a bit about our character. It is a natural impulse: to communicate, to show ones self and to be heard/seen by others.
As it was already said, we also gain more than one opportunity to learn, not only when we read other answers, but also in the process of thinking about the best reply we can give. Furthermore, we are compelled to write from our own standpoint and that is also the best way to practice writing skills; many of us repliers are foreigners, as myself, and this question-answer system is quite different from chat rooms, where misspelling is accepted and sometimes even encouraged by sms language and frequently superficial conversation.

I like to answer here because I want to help people. I answer a lot in the religious section. I hope that my answers will be a blessing and a help to someone. It's a small way to make a difference in someones life.
