My wife who is well qualified (PhD, Top of her graduate class) is trying to get a job at patent office. No one responds to the resume or phone call. I have been told by other federal employees that you need an insider to get you a fed job and most positions are already wired for someone. Is there any truth to this or are there agencies that provide employees to federal government that one has to go through.

No, you don't need to know someone to get into the Federal Government. I got in all on my own after sending my resume out to several agencies over the course of a year. The hiring process can be especially tedious. I mean, I don't even *remember* applying for the job I have now. I eventually found my application information and saw that from the moment I sent in my application, to the moment I was hired, nearly 5 months had passed.

Also, remember. It's great that your wife has a Ph.D., but so do a lot of other candidates. That shouldn't be her only major selling point. Trust me, I know. At my last federal job, I used to filter through resumes and CVs and weed out candidates before passing their info on to the interview committee.

Good luck!

They usually have the jobs posted on the web and you have to apply in a certain manner. Yes, most positions they already have some in mind but not all. You have to be persistent and follow all the rules - and the reason it helps to know someone is because the red tape is a bit arcane sometimes as far as what you have to do to apply. Go to fedjobs.gov. If there are no openings, they won't be listed. Federal agencies have to go through a lot of red tape to establish a position and post an opening. If there is no opening she will not be able to get a job. They are not set up to respond to people who send in resumes, only those that go through the application process.

From my experience, knowing someone is always helpful, but the lack of response is probably due to the sheer numbers of applications and resumes they receive. Is your wife following up on each application? I would keep calling until you obtain the name and contact information for the supervisor of each position for which she is applying.

Nope not true, just needs to apply. She may be given a few options where she would like to work. Since the hiring is now
done through OPM.
